2 Weeks After Trump Blocked It, Democrats’ Rebuttal of G.O.P. Memo Is Released

The release of the Democratic rebuttal was expected to be the final volley, at least for now, in a bitter partisan fight over surveillance that has driven deep fissures through the once-bipartisan Intelligence Committee and at times pitted Mr. Trump against his own Justice Department and F.B.I. Representative Adam B. Schiff, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, said on Saturday that the Democratic memo should “put to rest” Republican assertions of wrongdoing in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act…

Mueller Is Gaining Steam. Should Trump Worry?

Mr. Trump is correct that nothing produced publicly by Mr. Mueller to date has claimed any wrongdoing by the president nor any illegal collaboration with the Russians seeking to influence the 2016 election. The indictment of the Russians — who are accused of flooding Facebook and other social media with disinformation and propaganda — cited only contact with “unwitting individuals” connected with Mr. Trump’s campaign. The charges against Mr. Manafort and Mr. Gates depict an expansive money-laundering and fraud…

The True Source of the N.R.A.’s Clout: Mobilization, Not Donations

The N.R.A.’s impact comes, in large part, from the simplicity of the incentives it presents to political candidates: letter grades, based on their record on the Second Amendment, that guide the N.R.A.’s involvement in elections. Lawmakers who earn an “A” rating can count on the group not to oppose them when they run for re-election or higher office. For candidates who earn lower grades, the group deploys a range of blunt-force methods against them. The N.R.A. mails the voter…

Trump Condemns Florida Officer Who Didn’t Act; Sticks by Plan to Arm Teachers

“I’d rather have somebody that loves their students and wants to protect their students than somebody standing outside that doesn’t know anybody, and doesn’t know the students, and frankly, for whatever reason, decided not to go in even though he heard lots of shots being fired inside,” Mr. Trump said, referring to Mr. Peterson. He said the officer “was not a credit to law enforcement.” Speaking of the gunman in Parkland, Mr. Trump added that if his idea had…
