Some justices expressed frustration with the thin court record in the case, which arrived at the Supreme Court at an early stage in the proceedings. That left open the possibility that the justices could return the case to the lower courts for a full trial. In 1992, the Supreme Court upheld a Pennsylvania law that required doctors who performed abortions to provide some kinds of information to their patients. Several members of the court’s liberal wing said that the…
White House officials urged Mr. Bryant not to rush the appointment, according to Republican officials familiar with the conversations. “This was Gov. Bryant’s choice to make,” said Brad White, Mr. Cochran’s chief of staff and a veteran state operative. “Now it’s up to him to elect her.” Mr. Bryant is said to favor Ms. Hyde-Smith for reasons relating to both politics and personal affinity, viewing her as a rural populist in his own fashion. He has told allies he…
“People were stuck by nails, and a chair had collapsed with someone sitting in it,” he said, apparently a reference to an email sent by a senior aide last summer who said she was afraid that the old dining set was falling apart and could lead to a mishap. There have been nearly 100 special elections over the last year, and at this point there’s so much evidence of Democratic strength that there’s not much more to glean from each additional result. But the special elections haven’t taught us everything we need to know about the midterms. In…

We’re not just not addressing it, we’re adding to it.” Investors may be starting to worry about whether the recovery could be, if not ending, at least entering a riskier phase. In February, markets tumbled after a report showing unexpectedly strong wage growth revived long-dormant fears of inflation. The markets rebounded…

The frigid temperatures in Toronto this winter, followed by a February thaw and back to cold again has resulted in a five-year high in pothole repairs.
