Dundas’ Sir William Osler glee club wins national competition:School group named best in Canada after forming in September

Less than four months since forming, the 51-member Sir William Osler school glee club has won the junior high vocal category of the national CBC music class challenge.

The Dundas school’s first glee club, directed by teacher Pamela Kortmann, entered a video of their version of the song Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes.

Their performance was shortlisted to the top 10, out of hundreds of entries, which included middle schools from Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta as well as three others from Ontario. Sir William Osler was announced as the nationwide category winner on Friday.

According to the CBC music class challenge website, one judge said: “This was the video that actually made me cry instantly as the chorus kicked in and everyone started singing all together. You did a fantastic job creating emotion in your blended vocals! The harmonies were delicious and your performance was fun to watch. I loved it!”

One day earlier, the Osler glee club made their first live public appearances with a series of performances across the city – part of the Music in the City program – which started at Hamilton city hall.

Kortmann has formed glee clubs at other schools in the city. When she started this year at Sir William Osler, she found more than enough interest to form one there. The glee club includes 51 Grade 7 and 8 students.
